Establishing a Community of Practice for Exposomics.
Abstract
Exposomics is an emerging field aimed at capturing the complex exposures humans face throughout life and understanding how those exposures impact health. The burgeoning field is at a crossroads. With a decade of research, it is developing into a full-fledged science with impactful research. We propose the development of a Community of Practice (CoP) in order to realize the full potential of exposomics, as it requires an integrative and collaborative effort to connect the underlying science that spans multiple domains. A landmark workshop series, the Catalytic Workshop Series on the Exposome, sponsored by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) identified ten priority topics and five underlying areas of interest as important to operationalize exposomics. The nexus of ideas in these areas provides a solid basis to develop an effective CoP for exposomics. This paper explores the need for a CoP covering priority topics and a framework for establishing the CoP. We also identify activities that can be promoted by the CoP in three broad directions for promoting data stewardship, enabling collaborative analytics, and developing human capital. We believe that an effective CoP will be a catalyst for understanding how our genes and environment work together to sustain life, impact health, and influence disease.
